IN-HOUSE PRODUCTION – THE STRANGE WAYS OF THE OCCIDENT

The Strange Ways of the Occident by Ziad Foty
Short, Montage | 5 min | 2013

The Strange Ways of the Occident is a self-reflexive video montage that uses the ethnographic documentary genre to subvert the hegemonic Orientalist gaze. The film focuses on a veiled woman’s representation of the land of the Occident. Commenting on the centuries old tradition of Orientalism as well as moving past a reductionist view of the world which privileges difference between East and West, this film attempts to illustrate the similarities of both the Oriental and Occidental gaze as a function of historically variable power relations.
